Common Assumptions About Yoga Teachers – What’s True and What’s Not?

Yoga teachers are often placed on a pedestal, with many assumptions about how they live, look, and think. While yoga is a powerful practice, the reality of being a yoga teacher is far from the stereotypes. Let’s debunk some of the most common myths about yoga teachers and uncover the truth.

1. Yoga Teachers Are Always Calm and Zen

Assumption: Yoga teachers are perfectly composed, stress-free, and untouched by life’s challenges.
Reality: Yoga teachers experience the full range of human emotions. Their practice may help them manage stress, but they are not immune to frustration, sadness, or anxiety. Like everyone else, they have good days and bad days.

2. Yoga Teachers Are Super Flexible and Fit

Assumption: Yogis are naturally flexible and have toned, athletic bodies.
Reality: Flexibility is developed over time, and yoga welcomes practitioners of all body types and fitness levels. A yoga teacher’s ability is not defined by how deep they can go into a pose but by their knowledge, awareness, and ability to guide others.

3. Yoga Teachers Are Spiritual Gurus

Assumption: Yoga teachers are enlightened beings with profound spiritual insights.
Reality: While some yoga teachers integrate spirituality into their practice, not all are spiritual leaders. Yoga is diverse -some teachers emphasize mindfulness and breathwork, while others focus more on anatomy, movement, and self-care.

4. All Yoga Teachers Are Vegetarians or Vegans

Assumption: Yogis follow a plant-based diet as part of their yogic lifestyle.
Reality: While some yoga teachers choose a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle for ethical or health reasons, many eat a variety of diets based on personal preferences and needs.

5. Yoga Teachers Are Always Radiating Positive Vibes

Assumption: Yoga teachers are endlessly cheerful and positive.
Reality: Yoga helps cultivate a positive mindset, but that doesn’t mean teachers don’t experience sadness, anger, or frustration. They are human and process emotions like anyone else.

6. Yoga Teachers Have Minimal Stress in Life

Assumption: Yoga teachers live stress-free lives because of their practice.
Reality: While yoga provides tools to manage stress, teachers still face everyday challenges, responsibilities, and personal struggles. The difference is that they may have better coping mechanisms.

7. All Yoga Teachers Lead a Hippie or Bohemian Lifestyle

Assumption: Yoga teachers reject mainstream society and live an alternative, off-the-grid lifestyle.
Reality: Yoga teachers come from all walks of life-some live in cities, work corporate jobs, and have families. Yoga is adaptable to different lifestyles and doesn’t require giving up modern conveniences.

8. All Yoga Teachers Meditate

Assumption: Yoga teachers spend hours each day in deep meditation.
Reality: While meditation is an important part of yoga, most yoga teachers balance their practice with work, relationships, and hobbies. They may meditate regularly, but they also have busy schedules like everyone else.

9. Yoga Teachers Are Young and Slim

Assumption: Yoga teachers are all young, slim, and fit a specific physical mold.
Reality: Yoga is for everyone, regardless of age, body size, or fitness level. Some of the most inspiring yoga teachers are older, curvier, or have physical limitations, proving that yoga is about inclusivity and accessibility.

The Reality of Being a Yoga Teacher

Yoga teachers are not superhuman-they are people who love yoga and want to share its benefits with others. They experience stress, make mistakes, and live diverse lifestyles. The beauty of yoga is that it is for everybody and every body-and that includes the teachers who guide the journey.

3 Things That Made Me Do A Yoga Teacher Training

I spent years thinking that the only reason to do a YTT was to learn how to teach yoga to others – becoming a yoga teacher.
But eventually realized there was so much more to it and here are three things that made me take the leap and invest in a YTT.

You don’t have to show up perfect!

As a movement professional, I thought I had to already know everything about the asanas. I was training in Ashtanga at the time, and I remember putting so much weight on getting the jump-backs, the jump-throughs, completing the whole practice ‘perfectly.’ I thought: if I’m going to be there, I should be excellent already.
